Vrchovany is located around 3km west of Doksy. It extends on both sides of the road almost up to the Castle of Starý Berštejn. The Czech poet Jiří Wolker lived in the last house of the village.

There is a set of timbered houses and the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the village. The local timbered houses are good examples of the local rural architecture. Not far from the village there is a ruin of the Castle of Starý Berštejn from the 15th century.

Vrchovany is located around 7km away from Máchovo jezero, a popular holiday resort and ideal place for spending a summer holiday and enjoying water sports. The environs of Vrchovany are also good for hiking and cycling trips.
