Ralsko is located east of Česká Lípa, close to Mimoň.

The first notes on the settlement of the location where present-day Ralsko is situated date back to the 2nd half of the 13th century. In 1950 a military zone was established there where the Soviet army used to be based. The current village was formed after closing of the Military Training Centre in Ralsko.

Since the entry of the public in the zone was restricted for several decades, the district is assessed as one of the best preserved in the Region of Liberec. It is one of the two districts in the Czech Republic included in the network of the so-called European Biogenetic Reserves.
