Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bozkov

A church with an observation tower and a valuable Gothic-style statue of the Madonna, to whom the local people refer as the Queen of the Mountains.

The current building dates back to 1693 and was built upon the request of the landlady, Marie Polyxena Desfours. The only thing from the original church to survive the looting of Swedish troops was the statue of the Virgin Mary concealed at the chateau of Hrubý Rohozec. It is still an object held in reverence by worshippers, who gather there on pilgrimages and whose numbers reach 7000.

The exterior of the church is rather austere, but the interior is extremely lavish despite its rural setting. The altars were made by Josef Jelínek of Kosmonosy in 1757. The entire ceiling of the nave is decorated with scenes of Loreta litanies, the presbytery then features the scene of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and prophets.

The tower of the church is 49 metres tall and houses 3 bells, one of which is original, made in 1555 bearing a relief of the Madonna of Bozkov. The observation gallery is open to the public.
