The Rack Railway Line Tanvald – Kořenov is the steepest railway line of the Czech Republic. It climbs through a difficult mountainous terrain of the Jizera Mountains. The highest gradient can be found between stations Dolní Polubný and Kořenov. The line was constructed in the years 1899 – 1902. The longest tunnel lies between Kořenov station and Kořenov, it is called Polubenský and measures 940 meters.

The Region of Liberec does not settle to winter sleep in the winter. Popular ski resorts in Jizera and Giant Mountains do not offer only many opportunities to practice down-hill and cross-country skiing, but many other activities as well. We present you a short list of activities available in each resort.

You can find the most unique group of stone and iron lookout towers in the Jizera Mountains. We aren't too far from the truth when we declare that such a complex has no equal in the Czech Republic or even in the world. Most of the lookout towers were built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. As a rule, these first ones were of wood. A number of them succumbed after several years to the action of alpine weather, others were replaced by lookout towers from stone or wood.

The several year reconstruction of the unique Chapel of St. Barbara, begun at the turn of the century, has been completed in Grabštejn. Visitors now have the possibility to see the lovely mannerist frescoes that have been hidden for many centuries under an overcoat of paint.

The holiday resort Pěnčín offers a lot of interesting activities for children and adults as well. Its visitors can watch the production process of glass beads, visit a goat farm, go by a sight-seeing train to the near view tower Černá Studnice, enjoy the specialities made of goat cheese or meat in the restaurant U Brusírny, or buy glass beads, jewellery or goat cheese and other products from goat milk.

The Hrubý Rohozec chateau has completely changed its tour route. After two years of preparation, including archival research, restoration of furniture and new paint work, visitors may enjoy the atmosphere of a noble house from the period between the two World Wars just as it was used by the family of Mikuláš Vladimír Desfours Walderode, the last owner of the Hrubý Rohozec chateau.
