The restored Chapel of St. Barbara in Grabštejn

The Českolipsko Region

The several year reconstruction of the unique Chapel of St. Barbara, begun at the turn of the century, has been completed in Grabštejn. Visitors now have the possibility to see the lovely mannerist frescoes that have been hidden for many centuries under an overcoat of paint.

This concerns the cycle of the martyrdom of the Lord and the central figure is an imposing Last Judgment. Also visible next to this, along the perimeter of the chapel, are figures of the 12 Apostles and up above, over the galleries, medallions of the four Evangelists and also a fresco of the nativity of the Lord were also discovered. It was not possible, however, to decipher a secondary scene, despite all efforts, and remains a mystery both for the restorer as well as visitors, which the chapel will keep perhaps for all time.

The Grabštejn castle stands on a steep outcropping, around which flows the Václavický Brook, which flows from here into the nearby Lužická Nisa. At its very heart stands the Trojzemí (Tripoint), a site where the borders of three states touch - the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland.

Currently, the castle is open to the public. A cultural event is held here annually, which in number has no equal for any other object in the area.

Here it is possible to see attractions from the original collections of the families who lived here. After climbing the stairs to the tower, you can look forward to a romantic view into the natural beauty of three countries - the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany.
