Jizera Mountains
The Rack Railway Line Tanvald – Kořenov is the steepest railway line of the Czech Republic. It climbs through a difficult mountainous terrain of the Jizera Mountains. The highest gradient can be found between stations Dolní Polubný and Kořenov. The line was constructed in the years 1899 – 1902. The longest tunnel lies between Kořenov station and Kořenov, it is called Polubenský and measures 940 meters.
This railway line has been a cultural monument since 1992. Its status did however not prevent it from waste and abolishment of passenger transport, which has not been renewed until 2003. Nowadays, the passengers can travel by this rail all year round and enjoy the beautiful views of picturesque landscape of Giant Mountains. This line is famous above all for its fascinating views of the Sněžka Mountain and Giant Mountains ranges.
