Monument to the victims of WWI and the Mamlas signpost at Horní Černá Studnice

Jizera Mountains

When driving or walking through Horní Černá Studnice on the road from Dolní Černá Studnice to Nová Ves or Smržovka, do not forget to stop at the centre of the hamlet a few yards from the turn off to the Černá Studnice tower. Here are two local relics of what was once a very extensive masonry trade. On your right there is a monument to the fallen in WWI, standing in the shade of two large beeches. The monument was erected in 1923 in memory of family members and villagers lost in the War. The local associations which contributed to and erected the monument were the Firemen Volunteers, the village Civic Society and the Liederkranz Choral Society. Masonry work was carried out by Josef Hrdlička, snr., local master mason. The monument was damaged after WWII and was partially repaired in 1986. In 2008 the monument was fully restored by the Village of Nová Ves and the Nová Ves Civil Society with generous financial help from Liberec Region. The monument was unveiled with pomp and circumstance on 15.11.2008.

A few yards further on, again on the right and close to the old path up to the summit of Černá Studnice there is a map, and a little further on, an old stone milestone, locally known as the “Mamlas” (literally “numbskull”). The milestone was erected by the local Civic Society in 1911. When, after a great deal of effort, the stone had been moved and erected in its present location, one of the members of the Society removed his hat and placed it on the rounded crown of the rock and gasped, “…what a Numbskull!”, and the name stuck.
