Clam-Gallas manor brew-house

Jizera Mountains

This old brewery is situated on the banks of the river Smědá right under the Frýdlant castle. It is quite an extensive complex of buildings covering area of about 3 500 m2. The dominant features are two well-preserved chimneys and above all a onetime malt-house.

The brewery was built around 1558 at a request of King Ferdinand I. From the very beginning it was inherently linked to the Frýdlant castle. The first owners were Redern family and the last, just before the nationalization, was the family of Clam-Gallas. They also had it costly renovated in the 1930s. The brewery was extended by building a new malt-house with a brew tower, and a fermentation cellar made of reinforced concrete, which was very atypical for the Czech regions.

After 1945, the brewery was incorporated within the Vratislavice north-Bohemian breweries. This process, however, failed to achieve the desired results and so in 1949 the production was stopped and the brewery has stayed closed ever since. Frýdlant council is currently looking for a new owner, who would be able to make a use of the property with the respect that this historic building undoubtedly deserves.
