Traditional Winter Events in the Region of Liberec

Jizera Mountains

The Region of Liberec does not settle to winter sleep in the winter. Since winter in our region is primarily connected with skiing, lots of skiing events are organized there, such as cross-country skiing races or ski jump races. Apart from a wide selection of skiing facilities, you may also visit several traditional events in winter, in particular at the time before Christmas. You can visit the outdoor museum with Christmas decorations, enliven with folk traditions, or the castle in a festive mood and choose traditional products, which may be pleasant surprise for your loved ones. Here is a list of the best-known events.

Advent Fair in Sychrov
A traditional advent event is organized on the premises of the honorary courtyard of the Sychrov Castle. You may see folk crafts and buy traditional Christmas goods there. The event is accompanied by a rich cultural program.

Christmas in the Lipý Castle
Apart from traditional Christmas fair, various accompanying events are prepared for visitors, such as Live Bethlehem, stylish tavern, wine tasting in the castle cellar and others.

Merry Castle Carolling in the Rotštejn Castle
A traditional Christmas festival in an untraditional environment at the Rotštejn Castle. A rich program for young and adult carollers is prepared there.

New Year's climb to Ještěd and other hills in our region
The tradition of New Year's climbs to Ještěd has continued for more than 35 years. If you wish to get some fresh air after New Year's Eve, you may climb other hills in our region as well, such as New Year's Climb to Černá Studnice, New Year's Walk to the Frýdlant View Tower, or New Year's Climb to Štěpánka, or New Year's climbs to Smrk and the Nisanka View Tower.

Jizerská 50
A traditional skiing race in Bedřichov is usually organized in January. The race in classic style for 25km and 50km is determined for wide public. Additional races are Bedřichovská 30, a skiing race for children, or a race for corporate teams.

Carnival on the Dlask Farm
The Carnival on the Dlask Farm is held in February every year. Within a rich cultural program, you may see musical and theatre performance, or to buy traditional regional products. Surely, refreshment both for children and the adults is prepared as well.

Carnival in the Vísecká rychta
The traditional Carnival in Vísecká rychta in Kravaře is always held in February. The aim of the event is to show the way of life, crafts and culture of our ancestors. Visitors to Vísecká rychta will see traditional crafts – decorating of small iced gingerbreads, manufacture of candles, bobbin lace making and old traditional carnival masks.

Meeting with Krakonoš in Harrachov
This popular event has bee organized every year since 1946. It is a folk carnival dance with various competitions and attractions for all families, culminating in the arrival of Krakonoš with devils. It is held regularly on the first Saturday in March.

Krkonošská 70
Krkonošská 70, a traditional cross-country skiing race, is held in Špindlerův Mlýn in February or March every year. It is a long-distance race of teams for 25m, 50m and 70km. The race leads over the hill tops of Krkonoše and finishes in the Saint Peter ski-complex in Špindlerův Mlýn.
