The location on the sunny side of the ridge gave the village its name (Slunečná - sunny).

The first notes on the village date back to 1606. In the 18th century locals started to specialize in glass finishing and glass trade. Several nice one-floor or two-floor rural timbered houses with a base have been preserved in Slunečná, evidencing typical architecture of the region. Nowadays the village is mostly used for holidays.

As far as tourism is concerned, Slunečná lies in a rather attractive area. It is not far from Lužické hory, situated north of Slunečná, or from České středohoří, situated in the south-west.
