According to Palacký, the first note on the village with a Czech name dates back to 1384. In the past the village used to be an integral part of the Sloup estate. Glassmaking, which is typical for the region, started to develop in the 19th century. Till then most residents had lived by weaving and linen manufacture.

Dobranovský potok runs through the village and flows into Radvanecký rybník. In summer the pond is a popular destination for swimming and holidays. Several other holiday resorts are also located in Maxov. A popular tourist attraction is Havraní skály, located close to Radvanec.
