Tanvald is located on the border of Jizerské hory and Krkonoše, at the confluence of the Kamenice and Desná rivers. The first record of a settlement of woodcutters named Tanvald dates back to the middle of the 16th century; later the settlement belonged to Smržovka. Tanvald has been a separate town since the beginning of the 17th century.
Tanvald is the natural centre of life in the area on the border between Jizerské hory and Krkonoše. It is also a tourist centre of the eastern tip of Jizerské hory visited by hundreds of visitors both from the Czech Republic and abroad. As it is situated close to the mountains, the most popular activities are hiking, cycle touring and skiing.
