The village was founded in 1630, but the settlement of the area covered with thick woods continued very slowly. In 1700 Hrabětice was established, a village named after the owner of the manor - Count Desfours (Count - hrabě). In 1909 Janov became a market town and has used its coat of arms since then.

Janov nad Nisou lies in a picturesque country of Jizerské hory and therefore is an ideal place for spending a peaceful active holiday. Jizerské hory offers many opportunities for hiking, cycle touring and skiing.
