Bezděz was founded in 1264 as a royal town. At the time that the town was built a royal castle on the hill above the town was probably built as well.

Nowadays Bezděz is frequently visited by tourists, predominantly thanks to its location below the castle. There are also other sights in the vicinity of the town; Máchovo jezero is the best-known of them.
