The village was first mentioned in 1352. Its name was derived from the shape of a prominent sandstone massif at the southern fringe of the village. Sloup is a pleasant holiday destination; in the 1990s an architectural reserve of the village type was declared there. Sloup is an ideal place for hiking and cycling trips to nearby Lužické hory.
