The town is inseparably connected with glassmaking, the tradition of which commenced as early as in the 16th century. In the course of time the local glassmaking specialized in the manufacture of chandeliers, decorating numerous representative halls all over the world. In 1856 a special school for glassmakers was set up which has been in operation up to now. The first glass foundry was opened in 1886.
