The castle was founded at the beginning of the 15th century by Jindřich Berka of Dubá. It was also called Berkenstein.
In the mid 15th century the castle was in the hands of the Vartemberks; in the 16th century it went back to the hands of the Berka family. They left it in the middle of the century and moved to Nový Berštejn near Dubé. At present, you can see the tower and a not very large front part with relics of bastions.
