Jizera Mountains
Smědava
If you fall in love with the Jizerské Hory, the trail from Smědava, between the Smědavská Hora and Mount Jizera - above the valley of the Bílá Smědá River - is a must.
The walk is really pleasant, in particular if you leave your car at the car park near the chalet at Smědava. Some 500m from the Smědava, following the red trail to the fork to Smědavská Hora, you come across the first bunker (in Czech: řopík), number J1/109/160, a part of the defense line of the Jizerské Hory. Towards the valley, to the left, you can see the J1/108/160 and, just behind it, you can identify the whole line that descends down the side of the Smědavská Hora, crosses the Bílá Smědá River and continues farther to the east to Jizerka. Because of the clearings in the valley of the River, the whole line is well-visible. Hence, you can understand the historical tactics: one object was supposed to shoot - defend - in such a way that at least two other ones (on the right and on the left) would have been protected. At the time when the defense line was being built, in 1938, you would not have identified the objects so easily - they used to be perfectly hidden in thick forests. Towards the east, the line has been nearly lost in the newly planted forests so it is not so well-visible, however, this line crosses the road from Smědava to Souš and should have been continued via Jizerka and Polubný, and under the Štěpánka into the valley of Jizera, to be linked to the defense line of the Krkonoše.
